OUR
STORY

Jørgen Skydt Kristensen founded the company Skydt-Light in Esbjerg as an electrical engineering business. Just a year later, the company took its first step into plastics, delivering a large order to Disney and hiring several plastics specialists.

The company now produced illuminated signs and changed its name to SKY-LIGHT. During the 1960s, it expanded into building machines for blister packaging and started producing its own plastic blisters, working primarily with PVC and PS.

Thermoforming became the company’s largest business area, driven by strong partnerships – especially with LEGO, which accounted for 30–40% of turnover. Other activities included plastic cup printing, screen printing, and early semi-automated thermoforming of large parts.

Svend Erling Larsen and Jens Bonne Svennevig took over ownership of the company. A year later, LEGO announced a move away from PVC. SKY-LIGHT responded by developing its own PET-based film production – becoming the first in the world to extrude flat PET film and shifting its focus to food-grade film and packaging.

All operations were brought together in Varde, creating a fully integrated production site. Film extrusion became the company's main business area, enabling better quality control and efficiency across the value chain.

SKY-LIGHT expanded into the horticulture market by developing polystyrene plant trays as a more sustainable and practical alternative to traditional foam trays.

Co-owner Jens Bonne Svennevig exited the company, marking a new phase of independent ownership and continued focus on core competencies.

The company strengthened its thermoforming capabilities by acquiring Jysk Vacuum Plast in Esbjerg, expanding both production capacity and customer base.

A generational change took place as Søren Kjær Larsen, son of Svend Erling Larsen, assumed the role of CEO. The leadership transition ensured continuity of values and strategic direction.

SKY-LIGHT acquired the plant tray division of Sundolitt, solidifying its position in the horticultural packaging market and broadening its product offering.

The company became certified under ISO 50001, formalizing its commitment to energy management and continuous improvement in resource efficiency.

A major step toward circularity was taken with the investment in an Erema reactor, enabling production of food packaging with 100% recycled content. To expand its presence in the Nordic region, SKY-LIGHT acquired Formpac AB in Sweden. The move opened new opportunities in both extrusion, thermoforming and injection moulding and added competences within robot technology.

The company made a strategic decision to exit the horticulture segment and focus fully on sustainable food packaging solutions. Production of plant trays was discontinued.

Formpac AB was closed, and all remaining production was consolidated in Varde, further streamlining operations and reducing logistical complexity.
SKY-LIGHT joined Operation Clean Sweep to prevent plastic pellet loss into the environment and further reinforce its environmental responsibility.

In-house heat production was established, and a new partnership with DIN Forsyning ensured the reuse of excess heat – saving 800 tons of CO₂ per year by supplying heat to 700 local homes.

In 2025 SKY-LIGHT installed sun panels as a part of the strategy to continuously ensure a sustainable production. This investment is expected to reduce 570 tons of CO₂ per year.
